Windsor Chairs & Other Fine Furniture
Kevin O'Connell makes his Windsor chairs, dining tables, step back cupboards and grandfather clocks by hand in his small country shop in Hampden, Maine using the same tools as yesteryear. His passion for replicating the beauty and elegance of the antique style shows.
Each piece of furniture is crafted using spoke shaves, drawknives and hand planes. Spindles and bows are split from red oak, then whittled and shaved to size for each chair. Seats are deeply carved and shaped from two inch thick white pine. Maple is used for the legs. And, like the craftsmen of old, Kevin paints the three types of wood using milk paint and dyes in order to bring a unity of appearance. This replicates the look and appeal of an antique and is easier to live with in today's world.
