Step Back CupboardThe Step Back Cupboard got its name from early colonists storing mugs and cups on a single board on the wall. Hence the name, “cupboard.” As time went on and the Colonies prospered, families were able to afford better furniture. Cabinetmakers of the time created many fine examples of “cupboards.” This early Massachusetts version has several shelves that are “stepped back” from the main cabinet. Our Cupboard is made entirely of solid wood, no plywood or veneers. Each board is hand planned using a “wooden coffin plane” which leaves a very subtle concave surface. This replicates the feel of antique furniture of the period. No surface is perfectly flat like today’s factory furniture. The cupboard has two raised panel doors that are made using a wooden panel raising plane. This adds authenticity. The base of the cupboard has “dovetailed bracket feet” which add strength and are interesting to look at. The hand forged butterfly hinges along with wooden turn buttons complete the hardware and give this piece a wonderful antique look. A “plate groove” is also included to make it easy to display your favorite pottery. Lastly, each piece is finished with dyes, shellac, varnish and bees wax to give it a beautiful patina. Shown in antique pine, it is also available in cherry and maple. Pine: $2,400 Cherry or Maple: $2,900 |
